What would you do if you had a dangerous snake in your backyard and snakes were protected. It happened in Australia to someone I know.

I would try to lure it into a live trap.....like I do with my raccoons and skunks. Then, I would take it , trap and all to a spot about 10 or 20 miles from my house and let it go :-)

I’d make sure no one was looking and chop off the head with a shovel………..protected? Aren’t I?

    Great comment, julie.
Our son's wife was traumatized. Their Golden was out in the yard with the snake and she had to get the dog in and then call him at work to come and take care of the matter.
Our son "relocated" the snake. That's all I can say. : /

I had a baby possum commit into my house. After many phone calls it turns out I couldn’t have it “relocated”. I decided to get a live trap and trap it and poke it to death with a stick. Never happened……..

OMG ... They are sooo scary. Ugliest animal ever. They screech. I wish you could tell the rest of the story cuz I'm unclear what happened.

"RELOCATED"? Hahahaha! What a nice way to put it.

Why would anyone want to poke an animal to death with a stick? A baby no less. "Never happened" but you actually said it. And people here think I have issues. Sigh. A baby possum is harmless. Scare it and it plays dead as it's mother taught it. You can then pick it up by the tail and take it outside. It will not "come alive" until it feels safe again.

Colleen has an excellent idea. If a possum should ever come your way again, trap it. It will then fall over from fear and appear dead. After you have composed yourself take it by its spiny tail and start up your best screech and carry it to the far end of your garden. It will continue playing dead. Then you can run back to your house and lock your doors and windows. If it should return with a mean mean look in its eye, I'd call the police if I were you.

Their tails are not spiny. I picked one up in my back yard that was playing dead because my dogs were harassing it. It was a young one. He was scared and just wanted his mommy. I couldn't imagine anyone poking it to death with a stick. Just a cute little youngster trying to survive as all life has a right to survive.

I was sleeping in the car port and it was crawling over me to get inside that cat door! By law, couldn’t relocate it. It wasn’t afraid of me, I didn’t like his smile. Poke it to death? I couldn’t but I was ready to. He finally went away……. Happy New Year Ms. C………..

I did not touch the tail of the possum. He was at a distance, Thank goodness. Perhaps his tail was fluffy?
We had friends who had possums hang out on their deck. They were fearless. (hearsay) In other words, they stayed around perhaps awaiting a meal.

LOL. Nothing like a good pair of gloves :)

I always check the fingers before putting on the garden gloves. No telling what creature seeks warmth in my gloves.

young possums are cute . I had one in an open cage on the back porch one night. It went in there and coujldn't find it's way out, even tho' one end was completely open. One summer, I saw a mother possum waddling her way down my driveway with all her babies clinging to her back. When she got to the front of the house, she went next door, behind their bushes. Puh leeze, people DON'T kill or torture animals, unless you're life is in jeopardy.

Julie nailed it.Some snakes are protected. But so are my family. Anything that presents itself as a danger to them is on my hit list,PROTECTED OR NOT!

Yup Tommyh, I agree. That's pretty much the way my Australian son saw the situation.
It must be snakes time of year because you reported your carpet cobra just a short time ago. What did you do.? I wasn't really listening.

I believe I said the wrong name of the snake that Tommy found. Apologies.

Call The "Turtle man", he also catches snakes.  They may not be comforting to have in the yard, but maybe there are feeder animals that draws them there.  Check to see that those are eliminated or you may have a long term tenant!

Would a Golden Retriever be a "feeder animal"?
Turtle Man can be found on the internet or phone book?
There was a woman in my town who was very skilled at removing lice from kids hair. Her job kept her so busy that she did not list her phone number. You had to have a referral from someone who had seen her previously.

and what nickname did she have?

When I was younger, 2 of my freinds had lice in their kids hair. It's not that difficult.YOu shampoo their hair with lice shampoo. Then, you try to comb out the lice and nits. Then, after it's semi dry, you look for more nits. The shampoo kills the lice, but the nits are tougher. Then, you vacumn and spray you carpet and furn with lice killing spray. You opeon the windows a little bit. Before that you would have taken your kids and pets and husband over to grandmas house for about 4 hours. Then, two weeks later, you give the kids another lice shampoo treatment.

    I'll run away

You'd have to come home sometime. What if the snake set up his family home in your yard?

Many animals that are protected can be dealt with if they cause trouble in or around your home!  Years ago a Great horned owl was killing chickens nightly! The DNR said they can be destroyed if they become a nuisance.  Also I think many Florida residents have to call yo have an alligator relocated.

    itsmee

"Destroyed" may be another form of "relocation"?
I'm not sure I'd even like to live in Florida. Folks rave on like its some sort of paradise. I don't think so.

hi itsmee,i do not know how much you know about animals, but most of the time ,wild animals would rather get out of your way than waste their poison on you, their poison is for hunting food or defense ,i had a property in the bush and the wife and i were living in the shed while our house was being built,,and a Eastern Brown was heading for the shed,,i tried to force him back towards the bush,,he kept coming,so i took his head off with a shovel,,we had a Goanna,  a Butcher Bird, Magpie, frogmouth owl, Water lizard, and a Koala Bear,,they all lived on our property in peace,,,relocation means just that ,,owls ,magpie, possum,,,should not be relocated ,,as they are very territorial ,,and to finish itsmee,,an animal should only be removed or killed if they become a danger to itself or humans,,,and i say to Colleen,,,well said,,,,nice talking itsmee,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    itsmee

I lived in town in the mountains, the shore, and now the city. I'd love to live in the wilds like you did with the magpie, the Koala Bear, the Butcher Bird. I do not prefer to live with alligators, snakes ... or even bears.

If there was a poisonous snake in my yard and I wasn't allowed by law to beat the life out of it with a big red plastic bat and cut off its head with a spade, I'd go inside and call the police/sheriff.  I am not a big fan of snakes in the first place.
