One number is 4 more than twice the second number. Their total is 25. Find the numbers.
To solve word math problems, you need to translate them into a number equation.
One number (A) is 4 more than 2x the second number (B). SO, A = 2B +4
Now, make the equation. 2B + 4 (the first number) + B = 25
3B + 4 = 25
3B + 4 - 4 = 25 - 4
3B = 21
B = 7
A = 2(7) + 4, or 14 + 4, or 18

clonge, how did you arrive at that, other than 7 + 18 = 25 .
I just played with the numbers in my mind. It was easier than remembering algebra from the 20th century! If anyone knows the formula, can you please post it? Maybe it's x + 2 X + 4 = 25 or 3 X + 4 = 25. x =7 and 25-7 = 18.
Hi, Clonge! It's challenging for me to figure out stuff like this, as algebra was NOT my calling, but I think I explained my answer well. Let me know if it makes sense.
Same here, Bob. Bottom line: We both got the right answer.Who cares how we got there (lol)? If it sounds like a "cop out", it is.
