Are you offended by NFL team name Washington Redskins ?

Absolutely , I am offended. They should remove the word Washington. It offends me. People of indian background should be offended of the word Washington .

For my money the term "Redskins" is less offensive than the term "Indians. They were mistakenly dubbed Indians by Columbus (I think) because he thought he had landed in India. Native Americans are certaily NOT Indians and although they apparently never originated in the Americas I doubt if the migrated from India. Why not just call them aboriginals like we do because that's what they are.At the end of the day they are simply "Americans".

Here in Canada, our "Indians" decided that they wanted to be called Aboriginals. So that's what they were called. Then, they decided that they wanted to be called First Nations. So that's what they are called now. Lately, I've heard rumblings of "we should be called Indians". Some (not all) of them seem to seek out something by which to be offended...including team names!

Yeah.I know Ducky. It does seem that way over here at times too.Whenever you want to get your own way just yell discrimination. So you call them whetever they want to be called. In your case "Canadians" would be a good place to start.

I want to point out that I have no grudge against any indienous people.Whether they are Americans,Canadians or Australians. There are many things that I admire in these groups of people. There is a lot we could learn from their ways.

    Agreed Tommy.

hey Tommyh, changing the name of {south sydney rabbitohs) to south sydney aboriganls would not seem out of place, considering the amoun of aboriganals in the side,,,after all the kiwis have the all blacks, and they are not all black
    Tommyh

@Terry.T think what he's getting at is they would be called the "South Sydney Abbos".If you catch my drift."Abbos"as in "Redskins" supposedly being a slightly derogartory name. But sure. Why not? I will talk to Russell about it.
    terryfossil 1

Tommyh old mate,,,YOU have Russell's ear ?????????????i have never spoken to a Gladiator ,,,nice talking Tom

What about the Cleveland Indians? Some were offended when the fans would wave there hands up and down like a tomahawk??

    Tommyh

Yes.The New Dehli Indians would be more appropriate.

I want to start a team called; Butte, Montana Caucasians. Although they could be accused of being white supremist ;)

    Tommyh

Yeah! You wouldn't get away with it.

I rarely see the word "Caucasian" in my racial profiling choices. I love your idea. What kind of team would you have???
    figtree3

I would also like to create a new sport called "Prarie Doggin". Any ideas ;)
    Bob/PKB

You might have to build an underground stadium with clear glass so spectators can watch the diggin'????

There was some bruhaha about a high school with an "Arab" for a school mascot.  It has been the mascot for years and years and years.
I love your comment, zorro, and can't add anything clever.  I am not offended by the term "Indian", just the confusion of whether we are referring to "Native American Indian" or "India Indian"... we have a large population of the latter here... most seem to be quite well-to-do.  The homes they are building seem (to me) really out of place in the middle of a vineyard, kinda like this:

Not bad...a little small for my taste. LOL!

This is just the front, Ducky. The back goes on for a couple hundred feet, and then there's the pool, cabana, pool house, and fully manicured "back yard".....makes the Palace of Versailles look ghetto.

No, I'm not offended because I think that the name was picked to symbolize power and strength. Would anyone call a team the Washington Wussies? But, like columnist Charles Krauthammer said in a recent article, language changes over time and words that, at first, weren't  perceived as offensive can eventually cause strong negative reaction and it obviously offends some. I really couldn't care less, not being a sports fan. However, if they are going to change it I wish they would do it and then shut up.

They have no intentions of changing it. It's the PC crowd who keeps bringing it up. Year after year after year, they bring it up and demand the name gets changed. Even the Indians who have been asked about the name find no offence in it. The PC crowd can shut up about it. No one but they care.

I know, I was reading an article in the paper this morning about the tribe that's been quoted so much, I think it's the Oneida tribe, and they had interviewed some of it's members and essentially said they had no problem with the name. I hate that PC nonsense. It's like the word "retarded", when I was younger it was a descriptive term that meant someone who was mentally slow. Their brain functions were impeded for one reason or another. Sure, some people used it in a derogatory manner, but small minded people do that. Now, the American Psychological Association says it carries a negative connotation and it's time has passed. So, they're intellectually impaired. Geeze.
    Bob/PKB

Really well thought out answer. When I think of retarded, it conjures thought of a person who has incurred some brain damage that renders him unable to grasp and maintain knowledge and comprehension. "Intellectually impaired" conjures STUPID, which is not the same at all. I find PC values to be intellectually impaired.

As far as the name of the Redskins is concerned, I saw something online yesterday that I thought was funny. It showed the emblem for the team with the red background and the white circle with the Indian head in the center. But, instead of the Indian there was a picture of a russet potato and the caption said, "...maybe, we don't need to change the name after all."

no.. i would have thought they would have been proud of it,,,after all the white guys are not a redskin...but here is the learning curve..they will all play together as a team, where is the race difference there,,,,i am German,Irish, and Aboriginal,,,,but i am Australian first, and proud of my aboriginal heritage, but you point a gun at my country,,,,and i am all Aussie .......always good talking guys,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
