When was your first date? What did you wear? Why did you pick THE one?

I was the tallest girl in my 6th grade class. Gordon Smith was the tallest boy. So he was the one.  He was very good looking but never mind he was dull as a turnip and he smelled kinda funny. Not bad - just peculiar. Maybe I'd never been that close to a boy.

I wore a brown wool sheath with a dickie. (I told my mom, "Don't say Dickie. It's embarassing" ) He brought me a clump of pink carnations and I had a lousy time ... so did he. I think.     Now you say.   : )

I was fifteen she was fourteen. We met in the woods and no one knew of our friendship that went on for seven years. She is a black girl and I am white.  We talked and spent many long summer days together as secret friends and lovers. It’s quite a story that she wrote about many years ago but never published because of the effect it would have had on our families.

    itsmee

I am sorry that the story didn't get published. My workshop writing teacher said that any really good love story could never be published unless the author left his town, his family, his friends, and even sometimes his country.
I believe this. And you do.
Could you try it now? Probably not. Oh, I know not. : / thanks robert

    P.S. I take that back. I know nothing. : )
    mycatsmom

Robert, It sounds beautiful, like the star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. ♥ ♥
    robertgrist

The world was full of fears and prejudges. the color issue vanished between us.
    itsmee

It's still full of hate and prejudices. I wish it wasn't so but maybe that's just the nature of men and women. In California your relationship would have been just fine but go south and that wouldn't be the case.
How is your town? Anybody moving there?

I bet a guy a hamburger, knowing that win or lose we’d go out… I later married him. It lasted 3 years, I was divorced by the time I turned 21………..

    itsmee

You stuck it out quite awhile. I bet it was good while it lasted.
    robertgrist

I’ve learned that some friends and lovers can’t be tied together by marriage and some friends and lovers will still be friends and lovers without marriage and even with links in marriage.
    itsmee

    True words, robertgrist : )
    mycatsmom

jh, did you marry him to get out of the house ?
    jhharlan

    Oh, yes……..

We were both 14, we were the same height (short), I have no idea what I wore, we went to a movie on Saturday afternoon, and I liked him for the most important reasons. He was funny and made me laugh and all the girls (myself included) thought he was cute.    :)

    mycatsmom

my dad wouldn't let me date till I was 16! When I was 5 or 6 mos short of 16, he threw a monkey wrench into my one chance to go out on a date.A boy in my 9th grade class asked me to go to a party in another town. He came over and my dad interviewed him and asked him how he got to our house. Then my dad said I "wasn't allowed to date untill next year " The boy left.End of story. My dad walked away . No apologies, no trying to talk it out with me or explain anything. I wasn't allowed to " argue " with my dad. He considered anything argueing .It's hard to live with someone who is paranoid.

Parents were much stricter then, than they are now, I think.

I can't say what I did in the matinee when I went with Bob S. Oh my! It wasn't tooooo awful but I wouldn't want my mom to be sitting with us.
I was 13. I only did this movie thing once. As Robin Thicke would sing, I was a good girl.

Saturday afternoon matinee movies with Denise. A lovely little girl.I was about 13 & she was a year younger. The relationship lasted a long time considering.Until I was about 17.We just drifted apart due to different interests.I often think of that girl & wonder what she turned out to be.Something realy good I hope. All very happy memories.

    Tommyh

Oh! What did I wear.It would have been Amco jeans rolled up at the bottoms & I had a pair of luminous green suede shoes that I thought were pretty cool & she hated.LOL.
    mycatsmom

that's when my nephew started dating .....at 12 or 13. For his first girlfriend, I asked my bro where do they go on their dates ? He said, " They ride their bikes a lot " :-)
    Tommyh

I never really realized we were "Dating".LOL.Life was much simpler then a half century ago.We shared our chips & a coke in the movie. She bought the chips & I bought the Coke.Times were tough. We met inside the movies because my weekly allowance was 3 Shillings & I really had to stretch it.When I started work I paid her way .(Of course).
    itsmee

You might have liked my blue eyes. Bob S. did. : D. I would have adored your amco jeans rolled up to your kinees. Most of all I would have enjoyed your green suede shoes. One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go ... BUT DON'T YOU STEP ON MY GREEN LUMINOUS SHOES.
I get kinda silly at 3:24. Everything is quiet.
But now, I will gather my cat and climb the ladder to my loft and zzzzz.

hi itsmee,,my first date worth talking about,,i was 17 and knocking around in a rocker gang,,i wore a marlon brando leather jacket with a million studs on it..she was a nice girl and did not knock around with gangs,,dont know why she went out with me,,we walked all around Brisbane city till 5 in the morning..then i took her home in a cab,,it was a great memory,,,nice talkin,,,,,,,,,

    itsmee

That could well have been me. I liked the "BAD BOYS" and vice versa. (Except for Gordon Smith, of course) We went to Daddy-O's hamburger joint for a burger and a Cherry coke. He had the Chocolate Coke. My mom had quite a time with me.
    Tommyh

How come I don't know you Terry?
    terryfossil 1

depends where you are from Tommyh, what time, what day, what month, what year, nice talkin,,,,aussie,aussie,aussie.......
    Tommyh

It sounds like you grew up in the same town at about the same time as me.I wasn't a rocker, more of a surfie.Clubby actually. But I hung around in the city on week nights.Briz was a nice town in those days.Wasn't it?
    itsmee

It does sound nice. Ideal. I live in this huge city where nobody knows anybody ... well some.
It seems that people land here in Fresno because they were born here or they moved here to be near relatives.
Personally, I like a beach town BUT in California beach shacks cost a million dollars.
    Tommyh

Hi Itsmee.Brisbane is now a very busy city of well over a million people but back in the '60s it was often described as a big country town.It really has changed.
    itsmee

My clean air, clean water, everybody-knows-everybody little mountain town has become a place of "antique stores" and cutesy little places for the tourists. Oh, for the shame of it all. I've heard that most little towns get taken over by the touristas.
I wish you a BAZINGA kind of day. Let's go out for a Chocolate Coke or a Cherry Coke. We can dance to the juke box. (I take it that you're old enough to know what that is. I'll wear my pink lipgloss and a pony tail)
Tommy, you come too. We'll go back in time to old Brisbane.
Heck, the 22-hour flight ain't nuthin' for a date like that.
    terryfossil 1

back in those days Tommyh,i came from a place called INALA,,mostly full of louts and hoons,,and a lot of immigrants,,it was a melting pot,,and to itsmee, sorry but i was not a nice guy to to many people,,but this girl was a very nice person......
    Tommyh

I knew a lot of people from Inala.Nice Dutch people. It's still a melting pot.The ethnicity has changed somewhat tho.
    terryfossil 1

it has changed a lot has it not Tommyh,,you go up to the civic centre,,and you can not find an English name on any of the shop fronts.i do not think i am racist,,but i would like Aussie to remain Aussie,,always nice chattin mate,,,,,,,
    Tommyh

Ng & Nugyen seem to be the most common business names.LOL

I remember wearing dickies.And sheaths.  My mom called  them that too. Don't remember what I wore on my first date, if you can call it a date. That was back in the stone ages. The boys in my H.S. didn't ask out girls who  wore glasses, and my parents wouldn't get me contact lens, b/c they didn't want me to be happy.

Maybe they simply couldn't afford contact lenses for you?
    mycatsmom

maybe, Ducky, but everything I wanted,my mother said no b/c it's too expensive.Or, " wait untill your birthday or Christmas ''
She wouldn't buy me anything unless it was my birthday or Christmas. Very frustrating .
    itsmee

    AHEM....I wore glasses. O O
    Bob/PKB

When I got contacts I was l living nearly five hundred miles from home at college. Called my mom to tell her and she suggested I "wait", but couldn't tell me for WHAT it was I should wait. I've worn contacts since.

@Bob...ah, memories. I would say, "Mom, can I go to the dance this Friday night"? My Mom would invariably reply, "We'll have to wait and see". (Under my breath...never to her face..."It's Tuesday. What are we waiting for"? lol)

    My first date? With who?
I've never been one to date much....more from lack of being ASKED than not wanting to date.
How did I know "HE" was the one?  Well, come to find out, he WASN'T, but at the time, it seemed right.  We started as acquaintances who worked in the same building, got to know each other during breaks, eventually shared lunch hours once in a while. Then one day, about a year later, I realized I was actually attracted to this friend, and it was mutual.   We dated, shared a home, and planned a family together for the next 18 months.  Perhaps it was our ages (both over 30), neither of us had children, and no one else was a better prospect?
