Because that cable is what provides the high def signal for high def viewing.

Well because  nothing else will work, its the current technology.   Better at carrying digital information than the old RGB analog phono plugs.   The back of your samsung has many phono (RCA) inputs, you can hook up other video devices that are not HDMI

I just thought of something. I wonder if he is asking because the cable did not come with the TV. I know I was surprised the first time I bought an HD TV and found out the hdmi cable had to be purchased separately. In the "old days", everything you needed to make something work correctly came with the product. Now even ovens, washers and dryers come without the electrical cord.

Yes, that's right, My TV did not come with hookups. Used to come with everything. Not anymore. I see similar in the piano business, used to be that the mfg supplied in the crate, polish-polishing cloths, caster cups and keys and a really neat 'history of the piano' booklet.
Today they don't give anything, and the keys?? They don't even put locks on them anymore unless you buy the most expensive models.
