It would appear that matter is that which we can see, like other people, and everything tangible, animate or inanimate. How important all that is....is up to you. It's nice for me to be able to actually SEE and TOUCH the refrigerator door, open it and remove stuff I can SEE and TOUCH and EAT.
That is one reason matter is important.
