    I don't remember what the professor said was the right answer. Help me out.

    The know-nothing party wanted to curb immigration because they feared the influence of Irish, Germans and I think Catholic's in general. They were nativist. I believe they were formed sometime in the 1850's. and were a national party. I can't remember any specifics.
