The difference between heparin and warfarin can be viewed according to their function, dosage, and antidotes. Heparin works by attaching to the natural anti-coagulant called anti-thrombin III, which increases its blood thinning abilities. On the other hand, warfarin functions by reducing the number of Vitamin K produced by the liver. Heparin is available in parenteral form while warfarin is only taken orally. In case of overdose, heparin toxicity is treated with protamine sulfate while warfarin with Vitamin K.
