Since they exist and people use them, apparently there is a need for them. Perhaps the speed can be more regulated however. Slowing down for bends in the track may help to stop derailments like the one that just happened in Spain. If you watch the video you can see that just as the engine hits the bend, the car behind it bounces and then the train leaves the tracks. http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/world/2013/07/25/spain-rail-derailment-footage.cnn.html Perhaps a slower speed at the bend would have removed the risk of the bounce you see.
