I have a heat pump system for air and heat. Is there any reason I can't turn my main water supply off while on vacation

Well, if you do that, then you will want to open your taps so standing water in the lines does not freeze. You will have to bleed the lines of air when you turn the water on again though.

You may want to protect the fixture traps from freezing by pouring in  approved anti freeze  and also make sure that all trap seals are replenished before leaving to prevent carcinogenic  and flammable sewer gases from entering your home
