Every time I open Google I am asked to make Google my home page - I have done this several times but the question still comes up. How do I get rid of it ?

When the message comes up, look for the tic box with the option that reads, "don't ask again" or something similar to that. Check the box.

Moved Geoff 125c"s answer to here > Thanks for the tip but the message comes up in a white box across the middle of the screen - the box only contains the message, including instructions on how to make Google your default browser but provides no tick boxes or methods of getting rid of it. However, by googling for Google I got a website for Google and that had a facility for making Google your home page and the Internet Explorer icon now brings up Google - problem solved !
