Rabies, as a virus, needs a live host. As such, this disease is passed from one infected animal to another. Since you mentioned a mammal which is a predator, the answer is simple... from lunch. (or of course, others of the pack who are infected). Only mammals get rabies, and it doesn't need to be by actual contact from biting, scratching, etc. The droplet effect, as with colds, also spreads this virus. Remember this when you go to rescue your dog from a suspicious animal, you can get it while your protected dog (with his current vaccinations) does not even contract it!
