In the 1920's and 1930's, my late father took part in time trials for a local cycling club (The Stockton Wheelers), establishing records. I intend to offer his bike to a local museum who have expressed an interest in it. It has been hanging in a workshop for the past 60 years. As you would expect there is a lot of surface rust and the black paint work pretty shabby. I would like to at lest de-rust (if not fully restore) it before allowing the curators to view it. I would welcome some advice.

You may have guessed I'm English.

As a viewer of American Pickers, I would suggest not touching the surface, as they did not race in a refinished condition, and it may be best to leave as authentic as possible.  Let the curator decide that issue, I would say, not we who are uninformed on the needs of a museum like that...

Vinegar is possible but for a large item like a bike it is not practical. You could post on a site like www.cyclechat.com to ask on a wider forum. Incidentally is the bike an Elswick hopper?

    Scottish born also.

    Elswick.

    Again Mr McKarma thanks.
I had a 50's Elswick Lincoln Imp, but some b**** stole it some years back. Had it since school.
I edited my reply just now wondering if the electronic process would affect the paint work. The sites I viewed don't seem to clear on that point.

The best way to de-rust steel is to use an electrolytic tecnique, so Google for info.

You will need a battery charger, some washing soda and a large bowl or bucket.

On reflection, probably best to speak to someone at the museum as they may want it in its present condition.

Don't worry about being English, we all have a cross to bear.

    Elswick.

Thanks very much for responding. I will bear my cross with pride.
I do not wish to damage the paint work the sites that I viewed don't seem clear on this point.
I also have since read postings suggesting dipping in a preparation of weak white vinegar, lemon juice and common salt, creating a weak solution of hydrochloric acid. Any comment?
P.S. Scottish ancestry, what about Wimbledon!
