Well, my thinking was that if the person in the glass house accuses someone of doing something that they themselves are guilty of then that makes them a hypocrite which is the whole point of the adage. In fact, if you want you can type the phrase into Wikipedia and one of the definitions is hypocrisy.

The chief of a village in Tonga had the village carpenter build a throne befitting his stature as chief ,but alas each of the chairs although grand was rejected. Unfazed the carpenter resumed his task making many more but all he made were rejected. soon his workshop was full to bursting with chairs, so he embarked on the final build. that night there was a storm and the carpenters mud hut collapsed under the weight of all he had made. The moral of the story is- people in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones.
