The mail service used to be just "Hotmail," but was brought under the Windows Live branding with a host of other services from Microsoft, making it "Windows Live Hotmail." Microsoft now offers several domains to free email account holders (@hotmail.com, @live.com, etc), but you should note that they are not interchangeable. Thus, John@hotmail.com and John@live.com are not necessarily the same person, even though they are both through the same service and accessed via the same website. The same is true for Yahoo, which offers @yahoo.com and @ymail.com email addressed, AOL, which offers @aol.com and @aim.com email addresses, etc.
Finally, Windows Live Hotmail is the web interface while Windows Live Mail is the desktop application. Both can access your Hotmail/Live email, but the latter can also access email from other services/companies.
