    Your favorite....

A couple years ago, I got a calendar  ("I Love You, Mom" was the theme of the calendar) from my son.  Each day had a quote from someone or someplace. One I particularly liked was:
    "WORKING MOTHER"  is redundant.
DO YOU HAVE a favorite saying, redundancy, oxymoron (i.e. Giant Shrimp) to share? We are always so busy helping here, and it's nice to focus on each other and get to know each other a little better once in a while.
    Thanks for your contribution.

Clonge asked me to advise you that what you got a couple of years ago was "a calendar" not "an calendar". He said he couldn't resist.;-)
    Clonge

Not true. I now know better than to mess with a former English professor.

    Chicken !
    Bob/PKB

OK, "gentlemen", the "an" precedes the "I", which is describing the calendar, and needs the "an" (or, at least, I think it does).
Good thing I love you both, most of the time.
    digger

@Bob. I believe that to be a very common mistake.

    @Clonge. Chicken !

So digger, are you saying it should be "I got a I love you Mom calendar". Wrong...doesn't flow. Sounds like "I think you are a angel".

My understanding is "an" is used in place of "a" in front of any word starting with a vowel.
    Clonge

Mine also. In front of certain words not starting with a vowel also. "Honor", comes to mind.
    digger

@Ducky. I would agree with you had there been no quotation marks to separate the article from the object. You may be correct but the spacing does affect the flow.

Let's ask Bob. Oh no, she started this in the first place. lol
    Bob/PKB

It's the name of the calendar. I'll fix the question so digger is happy. We don't want AN unhappy digger.
He has my blessing to continue to be annoying.
I agree with EVERYBODY else, and am doing this to quiet him.

Good job Bob. You fixed "it" and "him". lol
    digger

    I like your approach,Bob.
    mycatsmom

Python, you're right. We were taught that too.
    Bob/PKB

It is be coming apparent many of us have too much time on our hands. WAY too much time (yes, Clonge, a sentence fragment from the Grammar Police Chief. Live with it! :D)
    Bob/PKB

P.S. Thank you, pythonlover, Ducky, mycatsmom, for your support. :D I'm going to research this further; count on it.

This is an incorrect saying and it's used all the time. "Black ice" as in, the car slid off the highway due to black ice. No it didn't. The pavement is black but the ice is just clear ice.      :)

    Bob/PKB

You would get a bazillion people disagreeing with you, Ducky, but not me!
    mycatsmom

the ice looks black, b/c the black asphalt is showing underneath the clear ice.
    Bob/PKB

People just see the darkness of the pavement enhanced by the wetness and misread it for the ICE being black.
We are all on the same page here, except the poor creatures who think nature's ice is black.

One of my favourites....... Anyone Can Be A Father But It Takes A Real Man To Be A Dad.

Truer words I can not imagine. My ex husband once called HIMSELF "the sperm donor", worthless father figure that he was. Well, I suppose he made a good BAD example.

I like that. Have you said it to someone or had it said to you?

    My favourite:   Religious Tolerance.

    Oxymoron?
    digger

    In my ever-so-humble opinion,yes.

I was once told   "your not a bad bloke, for a sheila"  meant to be complimentary by a Vietnam veteran that felt he could talk  to, and have drink with me on the same playing field as his mates

    Bob/PKB

:) You don't strike me as one who'd be offended by that. (I wouldn't mind)

Not my fav.  But this one is aggravating "not for nothing"...  Maybe it is typical of some of the ethnic groups?

    Bob/PKB

OH MY. Kinda of reminds me of "I don't got no pencil".

Bob/PKB said she got an "I love you, Mom" these being the operative words not an calender. Favourite saying one from the Bard - Hamlet "To thine own self be true"  There are so many I love but the old brain is on standby as I am now so tired - I come on here and stay so long. Hope all have a good night or day whichever applys.

    Bob/PKB

That is a wonderful saying, one my mom inscribed on something she gave me years and years ago. It has been a mantra of mine, whether I think of it or not. Have a good evening, dear Poppy3.
    Poppy3

Bob/PKB - amongst all the saying which I had when my Mum died in her book there was a similar one too.

    "Frozen ice"

    Bob/PKB

Verses liquid ice, of course. Dry ice??
    Clonge

    ...or "wet water".
    Bob/PKB

I HAVE heard that said. OOH, this water is wet. OK.
Time to see where Elvis went.
