A smart card, chip card, or integrated circuit card (ICC) is any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits. Smart cards are made of plastic, generally polyvinyl chloride, but sometimes polyethylene terephthalate based polyesters, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or polycarbonate.
Smart cards can provide identification, authentication, data storage and application processing.[1] Smart cards may provide strong security authentication for single sign-on (SSO) within large organizations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_card

a plastic card with a built-in microprocessor, used typically for electronic processes such as financial transactions and personal identification.
A pencil and paper serves a limited, but useful function that is somewhat similar. The modern version holds more information than time to read it all. Paper has an advantage in that the information stored there can be written in a style or format that only you understand and may have no value if lost or stolen. The smart card builds your dependency on such devices and the services they provide.
