I don't think he will want regulation height. That would be 10 feet from floor to rim.
Elementary Schools
The lowest level of play that has set regulations is junior high school. No organization governs the rules for basketball at the elementary school level. School officials and teachers can set the hoop at any height they deem appropriate for the students. Because the standard is 10 feet, many schools set the baskets at this height. Tommy, when my son was a preteen, we set ours at a little under 10 ft. so that he could succeed more. He told us later that it was not a help but hindered him from developing a correct shot when he played with it at 10 ft. He would rather stretch his abilities than retrain himself. (he stood about 5'6" at that time).
