How to trace an e-mail address
Instructions
1
Log on to your email account and open the email you wish to trace.
2
Choose the option that displays the header information. In Outlook, for example, select "File," and then "Properties" to view the header information in a new window. In Mail, select "View," "Message," and then "Long Headers."
3
Look for text that refers to where the email originated. Scroll down to the bottom of the list.
4
Select the email address at the very bottom of the list. This is where the email originated.
5
Look up the email by the message ID, as an alternative. Every email has a message ID stored beneath the address information, found in the field "Message-ID:." This number is a tracking number that contains the internet protocol, or IP, address of the original sender. Once you have the IP address, look it up online (full link in Resources), which also provides the originator's information.
