Plug the Western Digital My Book Essential into an electrical outlet. Connect the power cord provided with the unit to the power port on the back of it. Plug the other end of the cord into the outlet.

Connect the unit to the computer. Plug the provided data interface cord into the data port on the back of the unit and plug the opposite end of the data interface cord into an open USB port on the computer.

Press the power button on the back of the My Book Essential to turn the unit on. Usually, an "AutoPlay" window opens once the computer recognizes the drive. If this happens, click the "Open folder to view files" option to open the My Book Essential folder. If the "AutoPlay" window fails to come up, go to "Start>Computer" and double-click the My Book Essential in the drive list to open the folder.

Use the My Book Essential like any other drive on your computer. To move files onto the My Book Essential, open any other folder on the computer, click on a file in the folder and hold down the mouse to drag the file into the My Book Essential window. Let go of the mouse button to drop the file into the folder. Files also can be transferred from the My Book Essential by dragging and dropping the files from the My Book folder into any folder on the computer's hard drive.
