At least Americans are in Mexico legally. If they were to try and cross the border illegally, they would be shot by the Mexican police.
It's OK. I knew you were making a funny. Reality is, not so many Americans go there to live. The Mexicans flock here because there in Mexico, they have no rights. Zero tolerance gun control in that country. Only the drug runners, police and military have guns there. The Mexicans have a better chance at survival by coming here.
They are slaughtering their own people. All the while, the world remains relatively silent over it because they are too focused on American gun rights. Meanwhile, Mexican citizens are slaughtered by the cartel.
Actually, there is a fairly large ex-patriate American population in Mexico. Guadalajara is popular. An ex co-worker of mine moved to Baja. Many US retirees who live in MX, see their $ go a lot farther. Of course, there are trade-offs, like drug warfare in many areas.
A lot of Americans go there to get rich at the expense of the citizens there. I do not consider them Americans. They are as you say, ex. I view them as Mexican now and users.

These are all U.S. states that border on Mexico. Many Mexicans come to these states, and the U.S. for that matter,not only for the American Dream, but to join friends and relatives already there. These states have a long historic Mexican culture and identity and they make up large percentages in various areas (East Los Angeles, for example.) When entering these states on land from Mexico, and New Mexico too, many feel they have to go no farther than where they are, right in the state in which they enter. The fact that they have numerous Taco Bell and Chilis locations probably doesn't hurt either!
