"Pride comes before a fall".   My interpretation is one tends to pat himself on the back or brag about himself when he feels he has accomplished something pretty awesome.  Inevitably, that success is vulnerable to being surpassed or somehow falling apart at the seams. What once made one proud and boastful (or some other fiasco) now becomes the source of embarrassment and/or shame.

Example: I thought my kids had a little better life because they had a two parent home. My husband (their dad) left us. I had kept my feeling of superiority to myself,  but when he left and we spiraled,  I was ashamed,  humiliated, and broken. What had made me secretly proud became a very public embarrassment and difficult thing for me, and, as a result, my sons.
