Did Gary Burghoff really write "Old Man River"?

This story has been alive and recieving increased credulity since I first heard the claim, by a Burghoff associate, many years ago. Others claim it was his father who wrote the song; while some claim Jamie Farr wrote the melody, while Burghoff merely wrote the lyrics. Please find an answer to this mystifying age-old argument.

I've personally never heard such a debate. The song was in a musical in 1927!  Read here...

Incidentally, Gary Burghoff was born in 1943.

"Ol' Man River" music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

I think that song was written about a half century before Garry was even thought of.

The only song I know by this name is the song Ol Man River from the musical, Showboat. That song was written by Oscar Hammerstein.
