Hi, I am a college student majoring in elementary education, and have service dogs that I need. I am currently granted special accommodations in the classrooms to attend with them. I have a research paper to write on the topic "The effects of the academic development of the student with a teacher who needs assistance of the service animal which she brings to her classrooms. Resources are scant and I need all the help. I was wondering if there are any teachers out there who are in the same predicament, and if so, would how are they managing in the classroom, namely, does the teacher think the service animal effects the way the children learn?
Sincerely,
Vivian

This is a world wide forum, so the name of the country in which you live, would be helpful. Even at that, I'm not sure how many replies you would receive from here. I suggest that you might want to contact school boards, teacher's associations, etc., to ascertain this information.

I taught at a vocational agricultural high school, remember, high school. I had a dog who began as a herd dog for the livestock at school. After he escaped from the building during a bad storm, he became my pet, living at my home, and traveling to school each day. He was not much of a distraction, whenever he was in my classroom, almost always. He became very useful as a teaching tool when I taught a course on Veterinary Assisting. Students were able to practice many skills on him. From my experience, I would say that if this were an elementary school, he would have been more of a distraction to the students, as the youngsters have shorter attention spans. He was not a service dog, however we did use him for pet therapy visits to a local nursing home. Good luck, I hope that this helps you...

I did call the DOE's office here, in Hawaii, and the lady who had answered the phone seemed to be clueless, at least she told me she's neither ever heard of a teacher with the problem, nor did she know of any place I could find an answer to.
I think I'll need to ask the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission next, in order to at least, be able to contact a possible place who may know... But thank you for your trouble.
