Crown Capital Eco Management asking where is the carbon coming from? Is it at the expense of so many hectares of forests? I guess you can’t make activated carbon using young plants or bushes. Where do they source out their raw materials? Perhaps, from Indonesia where forests are “free” for the taking?

This company is making a lot of money – must be close to or more than half a billion US dollars -- selling activated carbon all over the world, considering they have plants in the US, China and Japan. Didn’t realize how much this product is being used, especially in many municipalities that need to treat waster for its water supply and, perhaps, their wastewater effluent.

In some Asian countries, processing of activated carbon requires planting trees for raw material source. So, it is no different from using wood chips for heating up boilers. The article talks about costs, sales and revenues and not much about details on operational requirements. You know, financial meetings don’t usually talk about issues not related to environmental ethics or other social issues. But you can glean into the real color, as they put it, behind the overall picture of the company’s impact on the environment.

Activated carbon, to point out an issue here, will filter out mercury and other toxic or unwanted material. The question we must ask is: Where is all that by-product carbon thrown away? Alright, you can reactivate it; but where do you put all the filtered unwanted materials? Back to the environment? Perhaps not. Recycled for industrial use? That would be wise. It is a problem that may never be answered directly by these companies, in the same way that they keep their real targets or real income as well-guarded secrets.
