    Being the first of humankind to set foot on another planet was a major, major achievement that really revolutionised the way that we look at ourselves and at the universe.
    Neil Armstrong became the most famous man in the world for a long time after that.
    The significance for science was that it was the first step in what is a very long process of colonisation of space that will take hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
    Every time people go back to the moon his name will be remembered, and when astronauts in the next 30 to 40 years go to Mars his name will be recalled for that major feat.
    For me, it’s not just the fact that he was the first man on the moon but the way he did it: he was piloting his own space craft and choosing the landing site himself because of a computer malfunction.
