The sound waves are received on the eardrum like a speaker (in reverse).  Instead of the sound coming from the source, cd, vinyl album, radio, etc. thru electrical wires to speaker, where it is released by vibrations, thus sounds.  The eardrum receives the sound wave vibrations, and it is then converted to bio-electrical stimuli which is carried via the auditory nerve to the brain where it is recognized as the particular sound that it is.   We make the appropriate response to that sound, bop to the beat, or retreat if it is an unpleasant sound. This answer should get you an "A"!

    Eavesdropping, for one.
