Is it better to go to a top prep school (#1 in country) and be "average" or to your local Blue Ribbon public high school and be in top 10?

I went freshman year to my local high school and got all A's. I also had a really great time. I did drama and many clubs within the school and participated in figure skating, ballet, and piano outside.

I transferred to a NYC prep school for sophmore year, and am now considering switching back.

Will colleges look at a tranfer mid-year negatively although I maintained good grades (all A's, one B) ? Is it better to finish out the year?

Will colleges view these two schools any differently (top private v. good public)?

I am just not happy at this prep school. The commute each day is over 1.5 hours in each direction. I have been unable to keep up my activities, and the school administration has been less than welcoming.

Going to this school has always been my dream, but it has become a nightmare.

    Any kind suggestions/comments are appreciated!

I think you may do better overall, if you are happy at school and involved in activities that you love.  Besides your grades, colleges/employers also consider your attitude and outside activities during your school years, as an indicator of your potential.

Top ten at a normal school. Cause then, everyone thinks your smart.

    Thanks for the answer!
Do you think colleges will also view it better?

Colleges look at your grades very carfully. but if you get all A's then one B pretty much wont matter. you'd still be a very good student.
