    Adding salt to water raises the temperature at which the water boils. The more salt that is dissolved in the water, the higher the boiling point. This phenomenon is a result of certain properties of solutions called colligative properties.

    By adding salt to water, you speed up the molecules of water with introduction of salt.  The faster the molecules move, the quicker (and lower the temp. needed) to bring the water to a boil.  Same thing with salt in water, molecules move fast, and salt water needs lower temperature to freeze.
