I hear a clunking sound while turning my steering wheel to the left or right. Could it be a u joint?

If it is front wheel drive, you will be looking at a CV Joint replacement or two.

    Exactly!

Yup, sounds like u-joint to me.

Well is it a front wheel drive? is so it could be a cv joint, her are no ujoints in a front axle, if its a rear wheel drive it could be a ball joint

no it is the half-shaft on the outter ( wheel) end of the cv joint caused usually by a blown grease seal or called boot . dirt gets  in and when it wears out it pops when you turn right or left . cost less than a hundred and is a easy do at home repair. Down load info on replacing half-shaft for your car.
