I've always thought that "loving yourself" is a bit strong. Of course you have to be "contented within yourself" in order to appreciate others. When a person learns to be contented, they can then "let the other person be right", argue less, be comfortable in social situations, genuinely like a lot of different kinds of people and given all of that, can certainly appear to "love themselves".

I think you can love others but it is most important that you love yourself.
Humans can be like rubber balls and can deflect love or when someone says "I love you". How can one possibly understand or love someone wholly if you can not love yourself, there will always be a feeling of something missing.
