clu, b/c people aren't interested in listening to the nuances ( the finer points of your speach ) I have that prob too. I find that i have to make my sentences or questions very watered down when I talk to people, or they will say, " Sorry ? or Huh ? or "Say it again? "

I have a voice that can be heard, gestures that can be interpreted. I try to talk loud enough for the people who need to hear me and quietly enough so as not to disturb others. I talk out of ONE side of my mouth, meaning that I say what I mean, and I don't BS people.
