Tests done by a gastroenterologist for a patient diagnosed with stomach ulcer include:
- upper endoscopy, which is an insertion of a thin tube with a camera on the end through the patient's mouth into the GI tract to see his/her stomach and small intestine. It also allows the doctor to collect a tissue sample (biopsy) that can be tested for the presence of H. pylori bacteria or other problems (such as cancer) in the stomach.
- Patients over the age of 45/55 (depends on the information source) need to be examined for having stomach cancer. The examination includes fecal occult blood test to detect blood in the stool.
- A complete blood count (CBC) also may be done to look for anemia, which may be caused by a bleeding ulcer.
- Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tests: An X-ray exam of the esophagus and stomach (upper GI series) may be used to diagnose peptic ulcer disease, although this test is being used less frequently.
