    Fire statistics

The area under fire in Australia at the moment is equal to the combined area of the entire United Kingdom.

Our fire fighters are working more hours than they are sleeping.

Fire fighters around the world work extremely hard in these situations.  We don't know how fortunate we are.

I truly hope this situation comes to an end soon.  xo Fishie

Good on them boys and girls, they are pushed to the limits but they don't get the credit or the wages they deserve, stay safe.

    Tommyh

Thanks Romos.what wages? Most of them are volunteers.
    ROMOS

Exactly, they are the best, we do the same here, but with us it's the stuff YOU need, WATER!
    Tommyh

Absolutely Romos.Water is our most precious resource.Getting it to the fires because of the distances involved here must be a logistical nightmare.

May God Bless the Fire Fighters

I was a Volenteer Fire Fighter and Fire Marshall, from the time I got out of the Navy ofter WWII, until I was required to retire at age seventy.

Good on you mate! So you know what we are talking about.:)

Tommy, our prayers go out to all of the Aussies to protect them and their property from this latest disaster.  We were enlightened as to the significance of the water shortages while we visited in 2000.  We would do the dishes as here in the US, and rinse them after washing.  We caught hell, as water was too dear, and they no longer allowed us to wash dishes.  Also, it was the first dual-flush toilets that I had ever seen, at the hotels in Sydney and Darwin.  We have had them here for maybe 4-5 yrs. now.  Good luck...

    Tommyh

Yes Ray as I have said before, water is our most precious resource. We don't even flush the toilet everytime we use it.Our dams around Brisbane are near capacity at the moment but the amount lost to simple evaporation is unbelieveable.
    bulletman

I have to tell you this ,Bustieone, The Dual Flush Toilet is an Aussie invention, developed in 1981 by Caroma at the request of the Fedearal Govt. to save water.

We just got a phone call this am from Australia. My wifes uncle isn't well, his older sister,(my mom-in-law, is our Aussie connection.
    Tommyh

Ah jeez! I hate those sorta calls.Does he live in Rocky too? Hope things are OK mate.
    bustieone

No he is in Townsville, the patriarch of the Crowley clan...

Tom, it looks like another busy day for the volenteers, temp estimated to be 45 degrees today in N.S.W.. it is crazy, unrelenting bush fires in the east and dust storms , cyclone Narelle in the west, i think there is defiantly some truth in Global Warming, 3 states with out of control fires, it is heart breaking to watch on the news, brings back memories of the Black Saturday and Black Wednesday fires, a Big TU for the Volunteers.

    Tommyh

Crazy ain't the word for it Kent.We have Bribie Island on fire to the north AND Now Jimboomba to the west has a serious fire going. To make it even Crazier Toowoomba had flooding yesterday 2 years to the day since the last flood that claimed all those lives. The smoke haze here is incredible. It's like a big blanket keeping the heat in.

I remember seeing that pic on the news.Neato!
    bulletman

That pic was taken at the Eyre Peninsular fires last month, it was misty to watch, a lot of koala's did not survive. i have posted a photo of a Koala below from the same fire, he recoved beautifully , his paws/feet were very badly burnt.
    Ann

The first time I saw this I cried.
    Tommyh

It is amazing. That's a wild animal accepting that drink,AND...Koalas don't usually drink! That's what their name means.."I do not drink".

Oh the whole thing is frightful and just horrible!  Many prayers for all and a BIG thanks to the brave firefighters (especially the one that gave water to that Koala!)

A Koala being treated for very badly burnt paws.""

LittleDoo, That was actually Sam the Koala, one of 2 that survived the Bush fire on Eyre Peninsula, the firies came across a dead female with the joey in the pouch, unfortunatly it was dead as well, died by smoke inhalation. THIS COMMENT BELONGS UNDER DOOLITTL'S ANSWER
    Ann

Oh, the poor animal. Do you think he will be alright?
    bulletman

Ann, the Koala recovered nicely and was reallocated in a different area. only two months ago a Koala was trying to cross a freeway, which is suicide for them as they are slow moving on the ground, a truckie stopped, ran like blazes, pick up the koala, and ran to the other side, to release him, a little crazy as the truckie was running the gauntlet with the traffic, good on him.
    Ann

Bulletman, thank you for your information on the koala. I hate to see any animal suffering.
I am afraid many will die in the fire and that makes me very sad.

I cant imagine beeing in your situation. I hope and pray that it will be over soon and no lives are lost. Take care.God bless all those brave firefighters.

    bulletman

Ann, i'm afraid the fires will be raging for quite a while yet, now the fires are out of control in four states, Queensland the lastest area to be hit as the heat wave continues, Tommy would know more, as it is his State.
    Ann

We never have fires where I live. California has fires every yearThis is a terrible situation. I hope everone is safe. I pray for you all and all the animals.
