Sorry Fish, black is absent of light, theoretically it is not a colour, practically it is.
Black is a shade and so is white on the shade scale... and all the greys in between. If you beg to differ contact the University of Alberta @ http://www.uofa.ualberta.ca/en/ContactUAlberta.aspx
The question is about 'colour'.
The addition of black makes shades.
The addition of white makes tones or tints.
Achromatic is Black, white and greys. Artwork that is executed without color.

@bulletman...fish is an artist who makes a living at doing it...it's like arguing with an electrician about which wire goes where. :)
Bulletman if you re-read my first comment you would see that I did say that Black is a shade.
@Ducky, Bulletman could have spent a semester studying colour theory and have a degree in fine art. He could be as brilliant as John Snow, Ted Harrison, Francine Gravel or Toni Onley. There is no scale to measure these things. I did spend time learning the art of hand pulled print making and have taken courses in screen printing on ceramics... none of which was quite as involved as mixing pigments or glazes but what the heck... It is Christmas and so... ho ho ho... la la la... black is still a shade!! :)
ok, i should have known better than to disagree with 'Ladies', a man can never win. lol - have a good one!
