An "unworldly kid" may respond, at the dress dept. at the mall??

Me, in Rhode Island, USA.  It is the smallest state, is not within New York, and is called the Ocean State, because we have proportionately more coastline than any other state (in ratio to our size).

Is that where the red chickens come from?

Yes indeed also home of the Rhode Island Red chicken. It is our state bird for that reason.

And we of course are known for the beginning of the industrial revolution with the Slater Mill. The playground of the rich and famous of the victorian era, Newport, with its mansions on the coast. Roger Williams and the settlement of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations (our official name) when he fled England in search of religious freedom.

Yep, a whole 200 plus years of history.

We have some roots in that history, as my ancestor, on moms side, was Thomas Wilson Dorr. He was a lawyer who overthrew the then governor in what is known as the Dorr War. This was over rights to vote. My mom was a Dorr. In Providence, there are houses dating back to the late 1600's. In fact the Williams house is at the park, and it is 1600's. Our Aussie relatives are in awe when they see these old places all tidy and restored to original condition, or better!

When I was a child, we vacationed in Rhode island in a home owned by one of our neighbors in NH. It was in a secluded area and near the lighthouse. Plumb Island, I think was the name.

It was probably Plum Island, or Prudence Island. Glad that you enjoyed little Rhoddy

Yeah, that was it...Plum. :) Yes, we did have a good time. I should visit Rhode Island more.

In the summer are loads of things to do. In Prov. on weekend evenings there is Waterfire, an attraction of lit caldrons on the river. It is a festival with many vendors, entertainers, gondolas, and other boats. Thousands of folks attend, along a delightful riverwalk, with many scenic overlooks and places to stop and relax.
