When cooking, do you like gas or electric? Why?

I've always used gas but now, I'm stuck with electric.  I'm getting used to it and it's not too bad.  What is your preference?

Gas--- Because you can control the heat visually-- also flame heat is even. Not to mention gas is cheaper than electric (in my location)

    Electric is safer than gas..

You're not me. I have scars from camouflaged burners.....

Camouflaged burners? How do you do that? I can understand some of the newer electric element stoves, we have one, its flat glass top, I hate it with a passion! They are attractive though. I don't know how you would hide a gas burner though. I guess with all my years in the restaurant business, we had all gas stoves, no electric except for the conveyor toaster. I got used to cooking with gas. At home, I am miserable with the electric burner, my wife loves it, she does most of the cooking now so I don't have much say.

I like electric but only because I've never had gas.    (Stove gas, that is.)

I like the control of gas but, the electric turns down easier.....

Gas is safer as far as accidental burns go as you can see the flame, electric can still burn you even thou though you can't see the red glow on low.

Just ask my arms and fingers..."Grace" is not my middle name.....

Gas!!!!! If you can very quickly go from a rapid boil to a simmer with gas.   With electric I had to use 2 burners to effectively do this.

So are you saying that I can't even boil water? :(
    doolittle

You can but if you need to go to an immediate simmer you might have to boil on one burner and transfer it to another burner...because it takes the burners a long time to cool down.

I'm with you an this, @doo......

We have had both in the two homes and one apartment of our married lives.  I love gas as it is easier to control, and when it is off, it is off!  Our daughter has electric, and when I babysit there use it to make lunch for the grand kids, and hate her stove!  It takes longer to get up to what temp you think is correct, then more than not, it ends up too hot!  I hate electric!!

    Oh, yeah....

Gas (or propane if you live out in the country here) is preferable to electric, for precisely the reasons Doolittle notes....instant adjustment of the temperature.  I have electric where I am now.

At my old house I never could get the gas low enough to simmer w/o boiling. I can do so with the electric. I WAS a die hard fan of gas....

I liked gas for years. Electric is ok, seems slow to get water to boil, but on the plus side is the microwave oven…heats bread in 15 seconds and defrosts a chicken breast in 3.5 minuets nicely. Then there is a convection oven that is amazing on baking at low cost. Some of these gadgets do some things really well and not well with other things. Coffee makers are a lost cause here due to the dissolved cement in the water  requiring distilled water which I now produce. I use gas to grill meat outside so the house isn’t loaded with meat odors and smoke. There is a stove top burner on my gas BBQ that I use for anything that would fowl the air inside like making soap, cooking bacon or steaming wax out of a batiked fabric. Splattering grease is not something to do in a kitchen…what a mess!

I'm ready to eat at your house. Never got the hang of convection ovens (yet).... Grease? This is why god invented paper towels....

I have had nightmares of endless grill cleaning stretching from horizon to horizon. When it comes to grease cleanup, I prefer a weed torch.

Grill? I read an article once on a grill cleaner that wrapped itself along the grates and you just pulled......

I think it depends on what you get used to- for years I had gas stoves and that was fine Switched to electric and it toke a while to get used to so now I rarely burn stuff up!

    jhharlan

Right, it depends on what you're used to.....

I personally prefer gas as i find you have more control over the heat whilst cooking, many of my friends now have the cooking appliance with gas cook tops with an electric oven, they love it.

I've always preferred gas but, I can't get it low enough at times.....
