I need to fill 30 5 gallon bails with sand, how much sand do I need to purchase in bulk measurement in tons.

Assuming you mean US gallons, that is about 19 liters. The specific gravity of sand ranges from about 1.6 to 2.2, depending on the moisture content, porosity, and specific grain size and mineralogy of the sand.

    1 gallon = 231 cubic inches 5 gallons = (5 x 231) = 1,155 cubic inches 1 yard = 36 inches 1 cubic yard = (36 x 36 x 36) = 46,656 cubic inches 1 cubic yard = (46,656/1,155) = 40.395 units of 5

That would depend on how course is the sand.

Fine sand would have a greater volume than course sand and a ton is a measure of WEIGHT, not VOLUME
