In preschool, age 3-4, my son made an angel out of a paper place mat, with a styrofoam head, and stickers for the face. It has a halo made of pipe cleaner. It has ALWAYS topped my tree.

We have a little mouse thing with a mouth that opens. In the mouth was still a Hershey kiss. it must have been 20 yrs. old. We still use the decoration, without the candy. Upon making it those years back, our son must have put it in for my wife! We laughed about it.
There's nothing like those treasures from the kids...paper angels, "little mouse thing" (was it stitched in plastic mesh?), plastic bag and coat hanger wreaths, noodle-frames.... I'm getting teary-eyed.
How about the construction paper garland-chains, the clothespin toy soldiers, the foam egg box bottom christmas trees, and other such gems. We have some in attic in a trunk, such a fire hazard, but priceless heirlooms! It might as well be a trunk of gold bars!
I'm looking at the angel right now...even her head is paper. I've no idea how it's lasted 20+ years. My granddaughters saw it for the first time yesterday (12/25) and loved it.
In 3rd grade, my eldest made 5 placemats (one for each of us) using a heart pattern to make Santa's head...they are really unique). I put them out for our Christmas dinner, along with one my youngest had woven (out of paper) in 3rd grade. They are priceless, and I know my kids get a kick out of seeing their stuff decorating my home.

I just put my Christmas tree up this morning and there is no topper required. It looks like this. :)

OMG, Ducky ... Your tree looks exactly like mine! We got ours at Long’s pharmacy two years ago. We got it for a very good price at the end of the season as it was used as a holiday decoration. ($15) It is magnificent and I could see it selling for $100.00. Our livingroom and dining room are all white lights.
