my on again and off again relationship of the past 10 yearrs has its ups and downs. after my "boo thang" survived a shotgun induced coma he decided to give me his best friends phone number because he says "dude is a good guy, he loves you, and that's what you need." I think he is just testing my patience, but I have been a little more clingy ,since the near-death incident, to him than usual. Is he trying to get rid of me in his hour of need?

After 10 years, I'd think you could just ask him what he is trying to tell you instead of thinking any of us can read minds.
PERSONALLY, hooking up with the best friend does NOT sound like a good idea. IF you two go your separate ways, you need to remain single for a respectable amount of time before you begin dating anybody.
