Scientists, as well as the media and the population have been struggling to define what constitutes an addict. Theories on the factors that makes one an addict have changed over time, from being considered strictly a moral problem that can be controlled at will to the current belief that addiction is a disease which cannot be controlled by the person. In this section, the various factors that influence whether a user will become an addict or not will be reviewed, but the main conclusion is that there is not a sole factor that predicts whether one will be addicted to a substance or not, but more of a combination of factors that might or might not lead one to become addicted.
