        calliope-- One of the loudest most obnoxious musical instruments, found on early American paddle steamers and antique carousels.  Powered by steam using pipes of various lengths for pitch. which is usually out of tune giving its obnoxious characteristic sound. Still a great novelty (for a few minutes).
