    n = nickels

    q = quarters

    n + q = 26

    q = 26 - n

    5n + 25q = 350   >  substitute first equation into this equation

    _________________________________________

    5n + 25(26 - n) = 350

    5n + 650 - 25n = 350

    -20n + 650 = 350

             -650     -650

    -20n  =  -300

    _____     ______

     -20        -20

    n = 15

    Now solve for q. Use either equation.

    q = 26 - n

    q = 26 - 15

    q = 11

    In order to figure out the number of each coin, one need to define on of them as y (for instance) and the other as 26-y.
    The initial equation is: 26 x [ 0.05y + 0.25 x (26 - y) ] = 3.5.
