Cans are made differently today. In the old days they were bare metal and once oxygen hit the inside of the can, the can would begin to rust. Today, cans are made with a processed metal that resists rust, some are coated to stop rust so, it's safe enough to leave an open can in the fridge for a day or 2. I would not go past that though.

It would be best to cover the can you're putting in the fridge for a few days.
