trying to improve my math skills can anyone tell me if im right and on the right path of figuring these math probs correct

    Hi Delores funk,

If you think this question through by yourself, you will see that you started out with 7 pennies, you took away 10 of them, you overdrew your bank account by three pennies, you owe the bank three pennies. You pay back four pennies and now you owe them only one penny right? One penny times three pennies will give you three pennies. I wasn't a mathematician when I went to school more than fifty years ago, but I think I remember getting an "A"+ for answering this question. Did the teacher give me the right grade? Ken in N.H.

I came up with 3. Even doing it @Flip's way..........

    Look at it like this: 7 + 4 - 10 x 3 ..... 9 is not correct.

    Flip

    9 would be correct if the problem looked like this: 7 - 10 + (4 x 3)

Thank goodness you showed up...I might have answered this. :)

    LOL Dardaigh.

    I get 9 both ways......Hmmm!!

I'm just gonna hafta flip a coin again. ;)

As far as I know, the procedure Chelleanne gave you is correct....follow the order of operations.

If you took this problem and worked it straight across, though, this is what you would have:

    7 - 10 (-3) + 4 (1) x 3 = 3

    You must do the multiplication first, though, (4 x 3 ) = 12

Then, you do the rest of it from left to right (subtract/add)

    7 - 10 (-3) + 12 = 9

    7-10+4x3=

    Order of Operation > PEMDAS

    P > Parentheses first

E > Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)

MD > Multiplication and Division (left-to-right)

AS > Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

    7 - 10 + 4 x 3 =

    7 - 10 + (4 x 3)

    7 - 10 + 12

    (7 - 10) + 12

    -3 + 12

    9

Chell, you get the award for being the best math person here; b/c you showed all your work. :-)

    3

    7-10+4x3=3

That what I come up too 9 is the right ans 7-10+(4x3)=9

                                                                   +7-10= -3

                                                                  4x3=12....-3+12=+9 or 9 or 9 or 9

    Use DMAS rule ??

    mycatsmom

    What's DMAS rule ?

It means first we use division than multiplication , than addition and at the end we do subtraction .

in mathematics and most computer languages multiplication is done before addition; in the expression 2 + 3 × 4, the answer is 14. Brackets, "( and ), { and }, or [ and ]", which have their own rules, may be used to avoid confusion, thus the preceding expression may also be rendered 2 + (3 × 4), but the brackets are unnecessary as multiplication still has precedence without them..

    Therefor 7-10+(3x4)

    7-10+12

    7-10=-3+12=9

If you doubt this answer enter [+7-10+3*4] into an Excel spreadsheet cell.

    The answer is 9

what are the parentheses and brackets for in math?

    7-10+4x3=33

How can you minus 10 from 7...........? .......unless  you're talking about  negative numbers. Is there really such a thing as negative numbers, or were they only invented for the sake of making it easier on mathematicians  to create more confusing math problems.?

    chelleanne

Yes, there is negative numbers. Especially if you look at it in terms of money. It is called BROKE!
Look at it this way. Say you owe Sandy $10, but you only have $7 to give her. That means you are in the hold for $3, money you don't have. So, that means -$3.

Chell, now that I understand. I wish my math teachers would have explained it like that. Thank you !
