I'd say he was Islamic.

Surely not, Ishmael was a character of the Old Testament, probably at least 2000 years before Islam was invented.
Where were you 4 days ago when this question waited for hours for an answer? I went to wiki-pedia. It seemed he was Islamic based on what I read there. *shrugs* I scan read. I wasn't all the interested in learning all about some other made up religious figure.
Ishmael is certainly mentioned in the Qu'ran as are Adam, Moses and Jesus, but as he was mentioned in Genesis he could be neither Christian nor Muslim.
Agree about religion, but it seems to me if you want to 'do' a religion you have to know something about it and similarly if you want to reject a religion you need to be informed.
I reject religions, but find them fascinating.

I'm not rejecting the religion, I was just not in the mood that day to take a course on it. The question had been hanging for hours. I find many here do not like to look at the unanswered page so if I at least give the question some sort of answer and move it to the answered page, then and only then does it get attention. Sometimes it's even just for someone to prove they can out smart me :)
I've read all these answers here and not one of them answers the actual question, I looked up a few sites when this question arose and found absolutely nothing positive, so @nom,if you know could you please tell me and the original questioner?
The best I could determine is that he is character in the vast melting pot of "Who is God or son of God". Was there even nationalities back when he was alive? I was never a history buff. To try and research him and the era, all you get is a bunch of names, places and religions all falling over each other.
Ishmael and his father Abraham built the Kaaba. The building in Mecca which is the center of Islamic religion. Mohammad placed the black stone from Heaven in the Kaaba. Approxamately four years later he was visited by the Angel Gabriel... which was when Mohammad began talking about what he had seen. Pagen Islamic... the writings inside of the Kaaba were placed there by himself and his father and are the corner stones of Islamic beliefs witch is based originally in the Jewish followed by the Christian faith. The majority of Arabian people became Islamic after Mohamed went to Medina and gathered 10,000 followers. They then came back to Mecca with 10 years of fighting ... after which the people of Arabia became Islamic.
He was Islamic, not Hebrew.

If Ishmael was Islamic, that must mean that Islam can be backdated. Thus Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and all the old Testament prophets must also be Islamic. I think we need a ruling by an Islamic scholar on this one.
I think the very idea of what you just posted is what has Christianity so bound and determined to bury Islam and make itself supreme religion.
I see no point in religions other than they lead the minds of men and cause wars.
