Sounds like the file is corrupt.
How to fix
Instructions
1
Click "Start," then "All Programs," then "Microsoft Office," then "Microsoft Word" to launch the program.
2
Click the Microsoft Office logo, then click "Open" to launch the open document dialog box.
3
Locate your corrupt Word document on your computer. You can browse to different areas of your computer using the drop-down menu at the top of the page. Select the corrupt Word document by clicking on it.
4
Click the drop-down arrow next to the "Open" button, and select "Open and Repair." This should fix your Word document and open it normally.
5
Click the "File Type" drop-down menu if "Open and Repair" doesn't work. Select "Recover Text from Any File" and then click your faulty Word document. Click "Open" to open the document. Microsoft Word will now recover the plain text from your file (without images or formatting) and create a new document from it.
