    ARE OLYMPIC GOLD METALS MADE OF SOLID GOLD?

    Reading about how Olympic metal winners have to pay TAXES (US) on their metals.

    TSC- the US Olympians have to pay taxes if they get a medal (gold, silver, or bronze) because they get $ also

    Right doo but the value of the medal also counts as earnings. The medal becomes part of the tax they must pay.

    My guess- It's Well Worth it to the Athletes! (Im sure they would rather not pay it but I still think they would rather medal and pay rather than not medal at all).

    Well all other athletes in the sports world have to pay taxes on their earnings and bonus's for winning certain achievements so why not the Olympians? I agree, they probably would rather pay taxes and have the medal/s.

    With the size of the medals now they would be far two heavy hang around the neck if solid gold, and far too expensive.

      The gold medal is silver with a 6% gold plating, however  olympics up to the 1930's were solid gold, the medals were a lot smaller than they are now.

        There's also copper in it. 6.16% copper if I figured it our correctly.

          Olympic gold medals are not made of solid gold. By definition of the Olympic Committee, gold medals must be plated with at least six grams of gold.

            - The gold medal is made up of 92.5% silver and 1.34% gold, with the remainder copper (a minimum of 6g of gold).
