I returned to work three weeks ago when my child was 6 months old. The council have presented me with a bill for over £1,000 which is the shortfall in rent that they failed to tell me had gone up during my maternity period. I am told I have no choice but to pay albeit only £4 per week and I and I can expect to pay an unknown sum on Council Tax. I only work 16 hours per week, and it looks like I shall be earning less than I would have if I had stayed on benefits. The benefits office dont seem to know what I will be getting in benefits if I stop work in order to care for my child myself. I would rather do this than sacrifice any time I can spend with him by working for someone for nothing! Can I just give up my job or would I lose benefits?

This is an impossible question for us to answer, here on akaQA, since we answer general questions only. There are too many unknown circumstances, rules, regulations, etc for us to help you with the particulars, in your specific case. You need to speak again with those who are handling your case. I would not advise you to quit your job yet, if ever.

Unless you're a widow, why is your "husband" not contributing?

I believe that if you give up a job voluntarily you do not qualify for benefits, but you need to clarify this with Social Services before handing in your notice.
Yes, the questioner is in the UK; handouts there are like Manna from Heaven. Some people ( I hesitate to call them families) produce kids simply to receive freebies like accommodation, medical and dental care, and money to suppost their alcohol, drug and tobacco habits.
And to breed the next generation of scroungers.

Quit a job in the USA and you won't get any unemployment benefits, but the way this place is run, you can go get Medi-Cal (in CA, other names elsewhere = free medical care), housing and utility assistance, food stamps, and general relief, along with some family support money (AFDC it used to be called). Plus "they" will hit up the absent father for reimbursement.
Many people say, "Why bother looking for work? I make more off Welfare".

I am surprized someone who works part time has any benefits at all! Where do you live? I think its not the USA as our health care is dismal!

Sounds like UK to me. They give away pounds left and right for all kinds of stuff.
