Anything relating to finance, more millionaires were created in the USA in the 80s than at anytime before, or since, and as Colleen says, the computer tech industry created a good few of them too.

    Hair spray or VCR salesman.

Hair spray is still selling like crazy .

Computer tech and programmer. It was the #1 job at the time because everyone believed you could become rich doing it. Computers were fast becoming affordable for the average household so there was a demand for techs.

Teaching, counseling, clerical, pot growing (in northern California ).

Yep,all of the above, my first husband trained as a programmer and aeronautical engineer, I distinctly remember pumping petrol so we could afford to, I studied accountancy only to fail 3rd year on a bottle of port (or maybe several)!!!!!

There were thousands of I T  jobs in Mich around in 1985, b/c Ross Pierot moved all his people up here from  Texas and other parts of the south , to work at his company --EDS, which he sold to G M in 1984. You couldn't hardly find an apartment opening anywhere !  .........there were so many new people here in the Det area.

    EDS was  Electronic Data Systems.
